Derek Henry Flood is an independent analyst whose work focuses on geopolitical conflict and non-state and substate warfare. He most recetly a contributing analyst for Jane’s Intelligence Review <\/em><\/a> <\/i>and The Redline Podcast<\/a>. He also has a Youtube channel, Fabled City<\/a>, documenting his own travel and reportage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He was formerly a correspondent for the Combating terrorism Center at West Point’s monthly <\/span>Sentinel<\/em><\/a> publication.,\u00a0 Jane’s<\/span> Islamic Affairs Analyst,\u00a0Terrorism and Security Monitor<\/a><\/em> and <\/span>Asia Times Online<\/em>. He was founding editor of the <\/span>Jamestown Foundation’s<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Militant Leadership Monito<\/em>r publication and an analyst for Jamestown\u2019s widely regarded <\/span>Terrorism Monitor. <\/em>His focus is primarily on Middle Eastern and South Asian affairs with additional emphases on Central Asia and the Caucasus. While studying Political Geography at San Diego State University, his interest in militant political Islam grew organically after spending time in Iran and Pakistan researching the rise of the Taliban movement for his senior thesis in 1999-2000.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flood has covered conflicts in Syria, Mali, Libya, Kyrgyzstan, Kurdistan, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon. He has also done extensive on-the-ground research on the back-story of 9\/11 in California, Arizona, New Jersey, Florida, New York, Germany, Spain, Malaysia, and Thailand. He has appeared on C-SPAN<\/a>, CNN, France 24<\/a>, BBC World Service, BBC Arabic, Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya,\u00a0 BBC Newshour radio and Voice of America radio as an international affairs contributor.<\/p>\n

His research on the Hamburg cell with cited in the 2012 Pulitzer prize finalist for history\u00a0The Eleventh Day\u00a0The Full Story of 9\/11 and Osama Bin Laden<\/em><\/a>, by Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan published by Ballantine Books.<\/p>\n

His geopolitical analysis has been cited by the Library of Congress<\/a>, PBS Newshour<\/a>,\u00a0Reuters<\/a>, the Daily Telegraph, RadioFree Europe\/Radio Liberty, and Voice of America. Additionally, Flood blogged for several years on the Huffington Post on international affairs.<\/p>\n
