Exploring Untermyer Park-Ancient Rome in New York

New York- I have a new vlog on my Fabled City channel this week where I roam around the gloriously restored Untermyer Park & Gardens in Yonkers, a working class suburb on the city’s northern periphery.

At once both grandiose and whimsical, these manicured grounds speak to another time. Built over a century ago, the structures stand as a portal to our collective past spanning from western Rome to the edge of the Mughal empire. After decades of neglect following the death of Samuel Untermyer in 1940, the gardens stand now nearly fully restored to their original condition when the project was initially completed in 1918.

The tech oligarchs of today would never envision something like this not just because they aren’t titans of the early modern era, but because they lack both taste and refinement, favoring the crass and bombastic.
